Soldiers of the 25th Airlift Wing see these differences because they have more services and resources at Kandahar Airfield than Soldiers at smaller military bases.

Service members at smaller foreign FOBs must continue normal operations without the services and resources of larger FOBs. Soldiers from C Company, 1st Battalion, 169th Aviation Squadron, currently attached to the 25th CAB, conduct medevac operations out of FOB Shukwani with only essential equipment and supplies.

"When we first got here, we had a dormitory," said Staff Sgt. Mike Berry, a flight medic with the C/1-169th Airlift, is a native of Covington, Ga. "We sent a team of three to set up our location. They drew up the floor plan, built the tents, built the floor, and coordinated with the Marines to set up generators, shelters, and HESCO barriers."

Larger bases have several dining options with chicken, steak, tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, a salad bar, and a dessert bar. There is no such thing in small foreign publications.

"We get T-Ration meals twice a day, one for breakfast and one for dinner," Berry said. "What can we do with meals, ready meals or snacks for lunch?"

Rarely do soldiers at FOB Shukwani get a taste of the big FOB life. For example, a "surf 'n Turf" night, which is slang for steak and seafood; Crabs are served in a garbage bag. The prawns contain four plates of beef and rice that are as wide as a laptop and as thick as printer paper.

A forward operating base (FOB) is any defensible military position at the forward operational level, usually a military base, used to support strategic objectives and tactical objectives.
